What is a Popup or Flash Store?
A pop-up, flash or quick store is a (usually) temporary e-commerce merch store for selling a small selection of items over a short period of time. Most popup stores last for just a few weeks or months, often until an event ends or the inventory runs out. Popup stores are usually inexpensive to set up and host, and don’t have many of the bells and whistles associated with a regular company store, like account management, extensive categories, multiple payment methods and complex product configuration. In fact, most popup stores will only have choices like color and size, as opposed to being able to pick logos and imprints in a traditional company store.
What are some examples of popup stores?
Popup stores come in many flavors, but the main way you can distinguish them from other types of programs is duration and selection – both of those are often on the smaller side. If you’ve got more than, say, 15 or 20 products and a bunch of categories, consider a company store instead. Similarly, if your store is evergreen – that is, it’s running year-round with constant updates, inventory adjustments and so on – it’s probably better built as a company store. However, small company store programs that don’t need a lot of account management (user account creation, user access permissions, etc.) and want a simple, fast checkout can benefit from switching to a popup store model.
All that said, here are some examples of “typical” popup or flash stores:
- Team uniform signups: For your kid’s softball team or your buddy’s adult kickball league, a popup store is the best way to handle uniform requests and gear.
- Events: Flash sales, triathlons, concerts or trade shows often sell merchandise associated with the event for a limited time (and usually with limited stock). If you’ve got an event with a merchandise table, the online orders would be handled with a popup store.
- Fundraisers: The world of fundraising is endless, from the tiniest crowdfunding project to massive charities. But the needs are consistent – small-ish selections of products, an audience of motivated buyers, and a need to get the job done quickly.
- What type of merch is sold in a popup store? Just about anything, from your typical range of promotional products and wearables to incentive products and limited-run collectibles. The products should be simple and easy to choose from; customers shouldn’t be comparing item features or configuring product options. Think Bluetooth speaker, not stereo system.
Popup stores often feature items with limited stock; they’re not a bad way “blow out” the last unsold inventory until it’s gone. But don’t mistake a popup store as only a place for clearing out your merch. Limiting quantities almost always makes products more enticing, especially when it comes to events.
I’m confused. What’s the Difference between a Popup and Redemption Store?
This is a reasonable thing to be wondering, since both flash stores and redemption stores are typically short duration and smaller selections of products. The main difference is how you pay for the merch in the store; redemption program products are usually free to the customer, but they do require a redemption code or access code, and a customer can generally only access the store once to get their gift or award. Redemption stores are often private and only available to the employees of a company.
Popup stores, on the other hand, charge money to buy things (most often credit cards) and are usually open to the public. Superficially, popup stores and redemption stores are very similar; in fact, the main shopping experience is almost identical. It’s once you get down to access and payment that you really see the difference.
Do Your Popup Stores Charge Transaction Fees?
Nope, never. Your store shouldn’t get more expensive the more successful you are. Our pricing is simple, transparent and completely free of hidden costs and transaction fees.
